Empowered Voices Study

'Empowered Voices' is a mixed-methods research project that investigates how civic engagement influences the mental health and well-being of Black, Latine, and Middle Eastern youth (ages 14–17). Grounded in a strengths-based, culturally responsive framework, the study explores how diverse forms of civic action, from protests and community service to creative expression and digital activism, can foster resilience, empowerment, and purpose, or contribute to stress and burnout.

Using focus groups, individual interviews, and demographic surveys, the project centers youth perspectives to understand how cultural, institutional, and interpersonal factors shape civic participation and psychological outcomes. Findings will inform policies and practices that support youth as empowered agents of change and promote equity in mental health and well-being. Led by Nabila Jamal Orozco in collaboration with the UDDC Lab and community partners in Western Pennsylvania, the study advances culturally grounded approaches to youth development.
