Daphne Henry Ph.D.

Lab Director and Principal Investigator

Dr. Daphne A. Henry is a developmental psychologist whose research focuses on how race, ethnicity, and socioeconomic status shape children’s academic achievement, psychological well-being, and physical health. At the University of Pittsburgh, she is an Assistant Professor in the Department of Psychology and a Research Scientist in the Learning Research and Development Center. Dr. Henry's core research program investigates how social positions, including race/ethnicity, socioeconomic status, and immigration status, mutually influence children’s developmental ecologies and their academic, psychosocial, and physical and behavioral development. Another arm of her scholarship examines sociocultural risk (e.g., economic disadvantage) and protective (e.g., culturally-informed parenting practices) factors that influence the academic outcomes of children of color. A final line of inquiry identifies contextual sources (e.g., parental socialization, neighborhood structural and social factors) of academic and socioemotional risk and resilience among racially and socioeconomically-heterogeneous children and youth. In pursuit of these research aims, Dr. Henry employs a varied methodological toolkit, including large-scale longitudinal data analysis, qualitative methods, and mixed-methods approaches.
